Reasons for using an Elizabethan collar

As a pet owner, you may want to remove your dog's Elizabethan collar if you feel they are stressed by it.
However, veterinarians are well aware that dogs can feel stressed by them.

Even so, if an Elizabethan collar needs to be worn, it's because there's a reason for it.
So, why is it necessary to wear an Elizabethan collar?

Protecting Wounds
The biggest reason is to prevent your dog from licking or scratching their treated wound with their paws. Dogs instinctively lick their wounds.
However, licking can often worsen the condition, such as causing inflammation of the wound.

Also, as the wound heals, the affected area may become itchy. This is the same for humans, but
if they scratch because it's itchy, there's a risk of causing inflammation or reopening a wound that had already closed.
Humans understand these risks and can tolerate them to some extent, but your dog doesn't understand why they shouldn't scratch,
so they tend to scratch regardless. Therefore, it's necessary to wear an Elizabethan collar to prevent them from scratching the wound.

If the condition worsens, further treatment at the veterinary hospital will be necessary. This means your dog will have to go through a painful experience twice.

It's easy to remove the collar because you feel sorry for your dog wearing it, but it's necessary to prevent your dog from experiencing prolonged suffering.
