Glass Gem Corn was developed in the 1980s by American farmer Carl Barnes, who cross-pollinated three traditional Native American corn varieties: Pwney Miniature Popcorn, Osage Red, and Osage Gray Horse Corn.

In 1994, Carl met Greg Schoen at a native plant gathering and became friends. In 1995, he gave Schoen a handful of Glass Gem seeds.

Over the early 2000s, the two continued to plant Glass Gem in small plots.
Starting in 2005, Schoen's friend, Jose Lucero, began mixing this corn with Pueblo and Spanish varieties.
This crossbreeding resulted in smaller, more intensely colored, and robust rainbow corn.
In 2008, Schoen shared seeds with growers in India, Israel, Kenya, Mexico, and the United States. One recipient used them in an educational program, sparking increased interest in this corn.
In 2012, photos of Glass Gem Corn went viral.

We encourage everyone who grows Glass Gem Corn to participate in seed saving again by saving your favorite seeds and planting them the following year. Share seeds with friends and neighbors, organize seed swaps, or start a community seed library. Share the story of Glass Gem Corn on social media and connect with other growers. As Carl Barnes taught us, it only takes one person to create a more colorful, diverse, and abundant world, starting with a single seed.
